A Big Idea
On 27 May 1961, Malaya's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, gave a famous speech in Singapore. At that time, Malaya was already free, but Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak were still ruled by the British. The Tunku shared an idea to join Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei into one new country called Malaysia. Together, these lands would be stronger than they were on their own.
Why Form Malaysia?
There were several good reasons for this idea:
- Security: Working together could help stop the spread of communism in the region.
- Economy: A bigger country meant a larger market, more trade and more sharing of resources.
- Politics: It could help Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak gain independence from British rule faster.
- Unity: The many races could live and grow together as one united nation.
The idea was exciting, but it also had to be planned carefully so that every land would be treated fairly.
Key idea
Malaysia was formed on 16 September 1963. In the end, Brunei chose not to join, and Singapore left the country in 1965 to become independent.
