Chapter 5

The Position of Other Religions in the Constitution

The Constitution protects everyone's right to follow their own religion. Find out how.

Freedom for every faith

Islam is the official religion, but the Federal Constitution also protects other religions. This is one reason Malaysia stays peaceful as a multi-religious country.

What the Constitution allows

  • Article 3 — other religions may be practised in peace and harmony.
  • Article 11 — everyone has the right to profess and practise his own religion.
  • Each religious group may manage its own affairs.
  • Each group may build its own places of worship.

Key idea

Freedom of religion means no one can be forced to follow a religion, and everyone may worship in their own way.

Remember

  • Article 11 protects freedom of religion.
  • No one may be forced to follow a religion.
  • Respecting each faith keeps unity and harmony.
