What is the Rukun Negara?
The Rukun Negara is Malaysia's national philosophy, or set of guiding principles. It has five principles that help all the different races live together in peace and unity.
When and why it began
The Rukun Negara was announced on 31 August 1970, on our National Day. It was created after the sad events of 13 May 1969, when there was conflict between different races. Leaders wanted to make sure Malaysians would live together peacefully in the future.
A special body called the National Consultative Council (Majlis Perundingan Negara) was set up to plan how to bring people together. It was led by Tun Abdul Razak, who later became Malaysia's Prime Minister. This council helped create the Rukun Negara.
Key idea
The Rukun Negara was born from a wish for unity. It reminds every Malaysian to respect one another and live together as one people.
