What is ASEAN?
ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It is a group of countries in Southeast Asia that work together as friends and neighbours. ASEAN was formed on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand. It began with five countries: Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Today ASEAN has ten member countries.
Why Malaysia joined
Malaysia was one of the founding members. Our neighbours are close to us, so it makes sense to be friends. Working together helps countries stay peaceful, trade goods, and solve problems calmly instead of fighting.
Key idea
ASEAN helps Southeast Asian countries live in peace, grow their economy together, and share friendship.
