Chapter 2

The Names of the States in Malaysia

Malaysia has 13 states and 3 federal territories. Let's learn their names and where they are!

13 States and 3 Territories

Malaysia is made up of 13 states and 3 Federal Territories. The country has two main parts: Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia), which is joined to the Asian mainland, and East Malaysia, which lies on the island of Borneo. The South China Sea separates these two parts.

The 13 States

The states are: Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor and Terengganu. Eleven of them are in Peninsular Malaysia. The two largest states, Sabah and Sarawak, are in East Malaysia, while Perlis in the north is the smallest state.

Each state has its own name, its own flag and its own special things to be proud of, such as food, dances and famous places. Together, all the states and territories make one united country.

Key idea

The 3 Federal Territories are Kuala Lumpur (the national capital), Putrajaya (the government centre) and Labuan (an island near Sabah).
