Chapter 5

Houses of Worship in Malaysia

Mosques, temples, churches and more — the special places where Malaysians pray and worship.

Special places to worship

Because Malaysia is multi-religious, we can see many different houses of worship. Each religion has its own place to pray.

Houses of worship

  • Mosque (Malay: masjid) — for Muslims.
  • Buddhist temple — for Buddhists.
  • Hindu temple (Malay: kuil) — for Hindus.
  • Church (Malay: gereja) — for Christians.
  • Gurdwara — for Sikhs.

Key idea

These different buildings show that Malaysia is a country of many faiths living side by side.

When we visit any house of worship, we must be polite, dress properly and follow the rules of that place.

Remember

  • Mosque = Muslims; Church = Christians; Gurdwara = Sikhs.
  • Always behave respectfully in a house of worship.
  • Respecting all places of worship keeps harmony.
