Leaders of a New Nation
Many brave leaders helped to form Malaysia. Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaya's first Prime Minister, first proposed the idea. He is honoured as Bapa Malaysia (the Father of Malaysia). His deputy, Tun Abdul Razak, helped in the important talks.
Leaders from Each Land
- Lee Kuan Yew was the Prime Minister of Singapore.
- Donald Stephens became the first Chief Minister of Sabah (once known as North Borneo).
- Stephen Kalong Ningkan became the first Chief Minister of Sarawak.
The Lands That Joined
In 1963, four territories joined together to make the new nation: Malaya (with its 11 states), Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak. Each land brought its own people, cultures and riches. Their leaders worked hard so that the different groups could feel safe and equal in one big family.
Key idea
Brunei was part of the first idea but chose not to join Malaysia. Singapore joined in 1963 but later left in 1965.
