Chapter 6

Vocabulary

Grow vocabulary with affixes and word families.

Affixes

  • A prefix is added before a word (un-, re-, dis-): unkind, rewrite.
  • A suffix is added after a word (-ful, -less, -ment): careful, hopeless.
  • Affixes change meaning or word class.

Key idea

Prefixes (un-, re-) and suffixes (-ful, -less) are added to words to change their meaning or class.

Remember

A prefix goes before the root; a suffix goes after.
