Chapter 9

Pronouns and Determiners

Using pronouns clearly and determiners correctly.

Pronoun clarity

  • A pronoun must clearly refer to one noun (its antecedent).
  • Unclear: Ali told Sam he won. Clear: Ali told Sam that Ali won.

Determiners

  • Quantifiers: some, any, much, many, several, all, both, each.

Key idea

Pronouns must refer clearly to their antecedent; determiners such as some, several and both quantify nouns.

Remember

Avoid pronouns that could refer to more than one noun.
