Core rule
- Singular subject → singular verb; plural subject → plural verb.
Tricky cases
- Collective nouns (team, class) usually take a singular verb: The team is ready.
- 'Neither/either...nor/or' – verb agrees with the nearer subject.
Key idea
Verbs must agree with subjects; collective nouns are usually singular and 'neither/nor' agrees with the nearer subject.
Remember
Phrases between the subject and verb do not change the agreement.
