Chapter 10

Conditionals

Zero, first, second and third conditional sentences.

Types

  • Zero: If you heat ice, it melts. (facts)
  • First: If it rains, we will stay in. (real future)
  • Second: If I were rich, I would travel. (unreal present)
  • Third: If I had studied, I would have passed. (past)

Form notes

  • Use 'were' for all subjects in the second conditional.

Key idea

Conditionals show cause and result: zero (facts), first (real future), second (unreal present), third (unreal past).

Remember

First conditional: if + present, will + base verb.
