Fieldwork (kerja lapangan) is a geographical investigation carried out in a real place. Students collect and analyse their own data instead of only reading about a topic.
Stages of fieldwork
A fieldwork study follows a clear sequence:
- Planning — choose a title, aim and study area; prepare tools and questionnaires.
- Data collection — gather information in the field.
- Recording and processing — organise data into tables, graphs and maps.
- Interpretation and conclusion — analyse findings and answer the aim.
- Report writing — present the study in a structured report.

To study traffic in a town, students count vehicles at a junction (primary data) and present the results as a bar graph, then compare with council records (secondary data).

Presenting and concluding
Collected data is turned into tables, bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs and maps so patterns are easy to see.
