Natural Vegetation and Wildlife

Malaysia's main types of natural vegetation and wildlife, the factors that shape them, and the importance of conservation.

Malaysia's natural vegetation

Natural vegetation is plant life that grows without human help. Because Malaysia has a hot, wet equatorial climate, most of the country is covered by dense tropical rainforest, one of the richest and oldest ecosystems on Earth.

Key idea

Vegetation type depends mainly on climate, relief (altitude), soil and drainage. The main types in Malaysia are tropical evergreen rainforest, mangrove forest, and montane (highland) forest.

Main types of vegetation

  • Tropical evergreen rainforest: tall trees in layers (canopy), evergreen, with buttress roots and climbers; found in lowlands.
  • Mangrove forest: grows on muddy, salty coasts and river mouths, with stilt and breathing roots.
  • Montane forest: found on cool highlands such as the Titiwangsa Range; shorter trees, mosses and ferns.

Example

Mangroves along the Matang coast in Perak protect the shore from erosion and provide a breeding ground for fish and prawns.

Wildlife and conservation

Malaysia's forests are home to rich wildlife, including the Malayan tiger, Asian elephant, orang-utan, tapir and hornbill. This biodiversity is important because forests supply timber, medicines and clean air, control floods and store carbon. Sadly it is threatened by deforestation, logging, farming, urban growth and poaching, which destroy habitats and push species towards extinction. Conservation measures include gazetting national parks such as Taman Negara, setting up wildlife reserves, replanting cleared land, enforcing laws against poaching and educating the public. Protecting vegetation and wildlife keeps the ecosystem balanced and safeguards natural resources for future generations.

Remember

  • Equatorial climate = dense tropical rainforest.
  • Mangroves grow on muddy, salty coasts with special roots.
  • Montane forest grows on cool highlands.
  • National parks and anti-poaching laws protect biodiversity.
