The small words a, an and the used before nouns.

A and an

  • a – before a consonant sound: a book, a cat.
  • an – before a vowel sound: an apple, an egg.

The

  • the – one special thing both know: the sun, the teacher.

Use 'a' before consonant sounds, 'an' before vowel sounds, and 'the' for a special known thing.
