Chapter 10

Countable and Uncountable Nouns

Nouns we can count and those we cannot.

Countable nouns

  • Can be counted: one apple, two apples.
  • Have singular and plural forms.

Uncountable nouns

  • Cannot be counted: water, sugar, rice, money.
  • Use 'some' or 'a lot of', not 'a/an' or numbers.

Key idea

Countable nouns can be counted and made plural (apples); uncountable nouns cannot (water, sugar).

Remember

Use 'much' with uncountable and 'many' with countable nouns.
