Chapter 12

Punctuation

Using capital letters, full stops, commas and apostrophes.

Basic punctuation

  • Capital letter to start a sentence and for names.
  • Full stop (.) to end a statement.
  • Comma (,) to separate items in a list.
  • Apostrophe (') for ownership (Ali's book) and short forms (don't).

Examples

  • I bought apples, pears, and bananas.
  • That is Sara's bag.

Key idea

Punctuation makes writing clear: capitals, full stops, commas in lists and apostrophes for ownership.

Remember

Use an apostrophe for ownership (Ali's) and short forms (can't).
