What is data?
Data is information we collect, like how many pupils like each fruit. We can sort data using a tally chart, then show it in a table, pictograph or bar chart so it is easy to read.
Key idea
In a tally chart, each mark is 1, and a group of five is shown with four lines and one line across them (5). A pictograph uses a key that tells you what each picture is worth.
Reading a pictograph
A table lists names and numbers neatly in rows. A pictograph uses pictures instead of numbers, so it is quick to see and fun to read. A bar chart uses bars of different heights.
Worked example
A pictograph shows balls, where each ⚽ means 2 balls. If there are 4 pictures, the total is 4 × 2 = 8 balls. To show 10 balls we would need 10 ÷ 2 = 5 pictures. In a bar chart, a taller bar means a larger amount.
