Chapter 8

Adjectives and Adverbs

Telling the difference between words that describe nouns and verbs.

Adjective vs adverb

  • Adjective describes a noun: a careful driver.
  • Adverb describes a verb: drives carefully.

Forming adverbs

  • Add -ly to many adjectives: quick → quickly.
  • Some are irregular: good → well.

Key idea

Adjectives describe nouns; adverbs describe verbs and often end in -ly (careful → carefully).

Remember

'Good' is an adjective; its adverb is 'well'.
