Chapter 10

Conjunctions

Joining words such as and, but, or, because and although.

Coordinating conjunctions

  • Join equal ideas: and, but, or, so.
  • It rained, so we stayed home.

Subordinating conjunctions

  • Join a main idea to a reason/condition: because, although, if, when.
  • I was late because I missed the bus.

Key idea

Coordinating conjunctions (and, but, so) join equal ideas; subordinating ones (because, if, although) add a reason or condition.

Remember

'Because' gives a reason; 'although' shows contrast.
