Continuous tense
- The present continuous shows an action happening now: is/am/are + verb-ing (She is reading).
- The past continuous shows an action in progress in the past: was/were + verb-ing (They were playing).
Key idea
The continuous tense uses be + verb-ing to show an action in progress (is reading, were playing).
