Types of Sentences

Simple, compound and complex sentences.

Sentence structures

  • Simple: one idea – I like tea.
  • Compound: two ideas joined by and/but/or – I like tea, but she likes coffee.
  • Complex: a main idea + a dependent clause – I stayed home because it rained.

By purpose

  • Statement, question, command, exclamation.

Key idea

Sentences can be simple (one idea), compound (two joined ideas) or complex (a main idea plus a dependent clause).

Remember

A compound sentence joins two complete ideas; a complex sentence has a dependent clause.
