Conjunctions

Joining ideas with coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.

Coordinating (FANBOYS)

  • for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
  • Join two equal ideas with a comma before: I tried, but I failed.

Subordinating

  • because, although, while, since, unless, if.
  • Although it was late, we continued.

Key idea

Coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) join equal ideas; subordinating conjunctions (because, although, if) add reasons or conditions.
