Chapter 2

Subject-Verb Agreement

Apply subject-verb agreement in longer sentences.

Agreement rules

  • Singular subject -> singular verb (adds -s).
  • Plural subject -> plural verb (no -s).
  • With 'each', 'everyone', 'nobody', use a singular verb.
  • Two subjects joined by 'and' usually take a plural verb.

Key idea

The verb must agree with its subject in number, even in longer sentences; words like 'everyone' take a singular verb.

Remember

Do not be confused by words between the subject and the verb.
