Adding and subtracting money
We write money in ringgit and sen: RM1.00 = 100 sen. Always line up the decimal point when you add or subtract, just like whole numbers with two decimal places.

Change = money given − total price. Multiply to find the cost of several of the same item.
A worked example
Worked example
Siti buys 3 pens at RM1.50 each.
Total = 3 × RM1.50 = RM4.50.
She pays with RM10.
Change = RM10.00 − RM4.50 = RM5.50.
Everyday money
When shopping we add prices to find the total, and subtract to find the change. Keeping two decimal places keeps the sen correct, so RM4.50 is written with two figures after the dot, not RM4.5. To buy several of the same item, multiply: 4 books at RM2.25 each cost 4 × RM2.25 = RM9.00. To share money equally, divide: RM5.00 shared among 4 people is RM5.00 ÷ 4 = RM1.25 each.
