Chapter 10

Diseases and Immunity

Pathogens, how disease spreads, and how the body defends itself — with an interactive exercise.

Diseases and Immunity: a pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease.

Pathogens spread through air, water, food and contact. The body defends itself with the immune system, making antibodies. Vaccination gives immunity by training the body to recognise a pathogen.

Remember

  • Pathogen = disease-causing microorganism.
  • Vaccines build immunity via antibodies.
