Chapter 17

Inheritance

Genes, DNA, chromosomes, and dominant and recessive alleles — with an interactive exercise.

Inheritance is passing features from parents to offspring through genes.

Genes are sections of DNA on chromosomes (humans have 46). An allele can be dominant (shows if present) or recessive (shows only if both are recessive).

Remember

  • Gene = section of DNA; humans have 46 chromosomes.
  • Dominant hides recessive.
