Chapter 3

Movement into and out of Cells

Diffusion, osmosis and active transport — with an interactive exercise.

Substances move into and out of cells in three main ways.

  • Diffusion — particles spread from high to low concentration.
  • Osmosis — water moves across a partially permeable membrane.
  • Active transport — moves substances against the gradient, using energy.

Remember

  • Osmosis is the diffusion of water.
  • Active transport needs energy.
