Chapter 16

Reproduction

Asexual and sexual reproduction, pollination and fertilisation — with an interactive exercise.

Reproduction can be asexual or sexual.

Asexual reproduction needs one parent and gives identical offspring. Sexual reproduction joins a male and female gamete in fertilisation, giving variation. In flowers, pollination moves pollen before fertilisation.

Remember

  • Fertilisation = male gamete + female gamete.
  • Sexual reproduction creates variation.
