Chapter 12

Respiration

Aerobic and anaerobic respiration and how cells release energy — with an interactive exercise.

Respiration releases energy from glucose in every cell.

Aerobic respiration

glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

Anaerobic respiration releases energy without oxygen (in muscles it produces lactic acid; in yeast it produces alcohol and carbon dioxide).

Remember

  • Aerobic = with oxygen; anaerobic = without.
  • Respiration ≠ breathing.
