Chapter 9

Transport in Animals

The heart, blood vessels and blood cells in the circulatory system — with an interactive exercise.

Animals have a circulatory system to transport substances.

The heart pumps blood through vessels: arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins return it, and thin capillaries exchange materials. Red blood cells carry oxygen; white blood cells fight disease.

Remember

  • Arteries away, veins back, capillaries exchange.
  • Red cells carry oxygen; white cells defend.
