Chapter 18

Variation and Selection

Continuous and discontinuous variation, and natural selection — with an interactive exercise.

Variation is the differences between organisms of the same species.

Continuous variation has a range (like height); discontinuous variation has distinct groups (like blood type). Natural selection means the best-adapted organisms survive and reproduce, passing on useful features.

Remember

  • Continuous = a range; discontinuous = distinct groups.
  • Natural selection = "survival of the fittest".
