Taking up water and minerals
A plant absorbs water and mineral ions from the soil through its roots. The job is done mainly by root hair cells, which have a long, thin extension that gives a very large surface area for absorption.
Key idea
- Water enters the root hair by osmosis — it moves from the dilute soil solution (high water potential) into the cell (lower water potential) across the partially permeable cell membrane.
- Mineral ions are taken up by active transport, which needs energy from respiration because the ions move from a low concentration in the soil to a higher concentration in the cell.
The xylem
Water and mineral ions travel up the plant in the xylem. Xylem vessels are well adapted for this transport:
- They are made of dead, empty cells joined end to end with no cross-walls, forming continuous hollow tubes.
- Their walls are strengthened with lignin, which supports the plant and stops the vessels collapsing.
Water moves in one direction only — upward, from the roots to the leaves. The pathway is: soil → root hair cell → root cortex → xylem → stem → leaf.
