Form 4 · Chapter 4

Agriculture and Forestry Sector

How green technology helps farms and forests produce food and timber without exhausting the soil, water and biodiversity.

Greener Farming

Traditional farming often relies on heavy use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, which can pollute rivers, poison useful insects and damage the soil over time. Green technology in agriculture aims to grow enough food while protecting the environment. Organic farming uses natural biofertiliser (such as compost and animal manure) and biopesticide (natural pest controls) instead of harsh chemicals.

Key idea

The goal is sustainable production: keep yields high today while keeping the soil, water and wildlife healthy for future harvests.

Efficient Growing Methods

  • Hydroponics — plants grow in nutrient solution without soil, saving land and water.
  • Fertigation — fertiliser is delivered precisely through the irrigation water, reducing waste.
  • Precision agriculture — sensors and drones give water and fertiliser only where needed.

Caring for Forests

Forests store carbon, protect soil and shelter wildlife. Green practices include reforestation (replanting cleared land), selective logging (cutting only mature trees) and agroforestry (growing crops and trees together). In Malaysia, the MSPO (Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil) standard certifies palm oil grown without clearing protected forest, so that a major crop can be produced more responsibly.

These methods must also keep the food supply reliable and affordable. Green agriculture aims to protect the land and water while still producing enough rice, vegetables and palm oil to feed a growing population, carefully balancing care for the environment against the need for food security in the years ahead.

Example

A vegetable farm switches from chemical sprays to biopesticide and uses fertigation to water its crops. Runoff into the nearby stream drops, useful insects return, and the harvest stays healthy.

Remember

Biofertiliser and biopesticide replace harsh chemicals. Hydroponics and fertigation save resources. Reforestation and MSPO make land use sustainable.
