What Sustainability Means
Sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of people living today without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. When a forest is logged faster than it can regrow, or a river is polluted faster than it can clean itself, that use is not sustainable. The goal of environmental sustainability is to keep natural resources such as clean air, water, soil and living things available far into the future.
Key idea
Sustainable development balances three needs at the same time: a healthy environment, a growing economy, and fair treatment of society. Ignoring any one of them makes development unsustainable.
Green Technology
Green technology is any product, equipment or system that uses energy and resources efficiently while reducing damage to the environment and to human health. Solar panels, energy-saving LED lamps, electric vehicles and rainwater harvesting systems are all examples. In Malaysia the government promotes green technology through the National Green Technology Policy and the MyHIJAU mark, a label that identifies genuine green products and services.
Everyday Actions
Individuals help through the 3R practice: reduce what we use, reuse items instead of throwing them away, and recycle materials into new products. Reducing our carbon footprint — the total greenhouse gas we release through electricity use, travel and waste — slows down global warming. Choosing renewable energy such as solar over non-renewable fossil fuels also protects the environment.
Malaysia has pledged to cut the intensity of its greenhouse gas emissions and to keep a large share of its land under forest. Reaching such national goals depends on both big industry and ordinary citizens making greener choices every day.
Example
An oil palm estate that replants trees, treats its mill waste and uses biogas from waste to make electricity is practising sustainability. It still earns income, but it protects the land and air for the next generation.
Remember
Sustainable = meeting today's needs without robbing the future. Green technology + 3R + renewable energy are the tools that make it possible.
