Form 4 · Chapter 10

Health Products

Health products such as supplements, traditional tonics and cosmetics support health but do not cure disease; in Malaysia they must be registered with NPRA and carry a MAL number.

What are health products?

Health products are goods used to keep the body healthy, prevent illness or improve appearance, rather than to cure a diagnosed disease the way a prescription drug does. Shops and pharmacies in Malaysia sell many of them, and advertisements make bold claims — so a smart consumer must choose carefully.

Main types

  • Health supplements — vitamins, minerals, fish oil and herbal capsules that add nutrients to the diet.
  • Traditional products — herbal tonics such as tongkat ali or ginseng drinks.
  • Cosmetics and skincare — sunscreen, moisturiser and whitening cream.
  • Functional foods and drinks — cultured milk and high-fibre cereals that offer extra health benefits.

Choosing safely

In Malaysia, medicines and health supplements must be registered with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) and carry an official registration number starting with MAL on the label. Consumers should also check the list of ingredients, the expiry date, and be very wary of products that promise to cure everything or that give results "overnight". Some illegal products have been found to contain hidden steroids or poisons.

Example

Before buying a slimming supplement, a wise shopper looks for the MAL registration number, reads the ingredients, and checks the expiry date instead of trusting the advertisement alone.

It is also sensible to ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking a new supplement, especially for children, pregnant women or people already on medication, because some products can interact with medicine or be taken in the wrong amount. A healthy diet, enough sleep and regular exercise remain the foundation of good health, and health products are only an extra help on top of these habits.

Key idea

Health products support health but do not replace a balanced diet, exercise and proper medical treatment. Choose only registered products and follow the stated dose.

Remember

No supplement can replace real food. Be suspicious of any product that claims to cure every disease.
