What Is a Healthy Mind?
A healthy mind is more than the absence of illness. It means being able to think clearly, handle everyday stress, get along with others, and feel positive about life. Just as the body can fall ill, the mind can too, so it needs care and good habits. Good mental health helps a student concentrate, learn and make sensible decisions.
Key idea
Stress is the body's response to pressure. A little stress can push us to prepare and perform, but too much stress over a long time harms both mind and body.
Managing Stress
Some pressure before an exam is normal. Problems arise when stress is heavy and lasts a long time, causing poor sleep, headaches, anxiety or low mood. Healthy ways to cope include planning your time, talking to someone you trust, taking breaks, and relaxation methods such as deep breathing or meditation. Unhealthy 'escapes' such as drugs, smoking or alcohol only make things worse.
Habits for a Healthy Mind
- Get enough sleep every night so the brain can rest and recover.
- Exercise regularly — physical activity improves mood.
- Eat a balanced diet to fuel the brain.
- Keep positive relationships with family and friends.
- Ask for help early; there is no shame in seeing a counsellor.
It also helps to notice warning signs early, in ourselves and in friends: lasting sadness, losing interest in things once enjoyed, or pulling away from others. A caring word and encouragement to seek help can make a real difference.
Example
Before SPM, a student makes a study timetable, sleeps at a fixed time, jogs three times a week and talks to a teacher when worried. She stays calmer and studies more effectively.
Remember
Manage stress in healthy ways: sleep, exercise, balanced diet, good relationships and asking for help. Drugs and alcohol are never healthy coping methods.
