What is a product life cycle?
The product life cycle traces a product from the moment its raw materials are taken from the Earth until it is finally thrown away, sometimes called 'cradle to grave'. Studying it helps us see how much energy, water and raw material a product uses, and how much waste and pollution it creates, so we can make greener choices.
The stages
- Raw material extraction – mining, drilling or harvesting the materials, which uses natural resources.
- Manufacturing / processing – turning materials into a product, using energy and often releasing emissions.
- Packaging and distribution – wrapping the product and transporting it, using fuel and materials.
- Use – the consumer uses the product, which may need electricity or water.
- Disposal – the product is thrown away, recycled or reused at the end of its life.
Key idea
A full life cycle runs: raw materials → manufacture → packaging & distribution → use → disposal. Each stage has an environmental cost.
Reducing the impact
A life cycle assessment (LCA) measures the total impact of a product so designers can lower it. The 3R approach – reduce, reuse, recycle – cuts waste and saves resources at the disposal stage. Choosing biodegradable materials, designing goods that last longer and using less packaging all help. Manufacturers can also use renewable energy and cleaner processes so that fewer emissions are produced at the manufacturing stage.
Example
A drinks can starts as bauxite ore that is mined and smelted into aluminium, shaped into a can, filled and shipped to a Malaysian shop, used once, then either recycled into a new can or dumped in a landfill.
Remember
Recycling returns a used product to the raw-material stage, so the life cycle becomes a loop instead of a straight line to the landfill.
