Managing Solid Waste
As the population grows, so does the mountain of rubbish it produces. Green technology aims to cut waste at the source and to treat what is left in ways that harm the environment least. The most important habit is the 3R: reduce, reuse and recycle. Sorting rubbish into paper, plastic, glass and metal lets materials be recycled into new products instead of being buried.
Key idea
A sanitary landfill has a plastic and clay lining plus pipes that collect liquid (leachate) and gas, so waste does not poison the soil and groundwater. An open dumpsite has none of this.
Treating Waste Greenly
- Composting — food and garden waste rot into fertiliser for plants.
- Recycling — used materials are made into new items, saving raw resources.
- Waste-to-energy — burning waste in modern incinerators can generate electricity while gas from landfills can be captured as fuel.
Wastewater Treatment
Wastewater (sewage) is dirty water from homes, toilets and factories. If released untreated it pollutes rivers and spreads disease. In Malaysia, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) operates sewage treatment plants. Treatment removes solids, then bacteria break down organic matter, and the water is disinfected before being released back to rivers. Treating wastewater protects both public health and aquatic life.
Landfill space is limited and building new sites is costly, so cutting waste at the source saves both land and money. Illegal dumping and burning of rubbish are avoided because they release toxic fumes and pollute rivers.
Example
A housing area separates its rubbish for recycling, composts kitchen scraps, and sends its sewage to an IWK plant. Less rubbish reaches the landfill and the nearby river stays clean enough for fish.

Reduce first, then reuse and recycle. Treat wastewater before it is released. A sanitary landfill is lined to protect soil and groundwater.
